PLNOG #25

starting from tomorrow, we’re launching another edition of PLNOG conference. as usually, I’d like to invite you to join us. I’ll be delivering session about Segment Routing with Piotr Jabłoński during second day of the conference, at 4:15pm. as Segment Routing was already covered couple of times, we’ll focus on practical deployment guide in existing networks. I’ll be also demoing some of the aspects we’ll cover live during the session....

SDN Affinity

recently thanks to Robert Pająk i’ve had an opportunity to speak at fall edition of Akamai Affinity. as the request was to cover the networking side of innovation, i did my best. actually, that was not so recently - back in november last year, to be exact. but indeed quite recently we’ve released news about our 400Gbit/s switch and on the Cisco Live! at Barcelona we’ve demonstrated for the first time ACI evolution - ACI Anywhere....

PLNOG #20

plnog, plnog and… it’s gone. twentieth edition - how the time flies… from the beginning we knew it may be hard, but we can make it. ’let’s target 60 people!’ was the second decision after we agreed to ‘do this’ and create PLNOG. 124 of you showed up. i don’t really remember all of the things that happened that day. and that was only 10 years ago! i remember only the fact, that we couldn’t fit you in one of the Cracows Wawel room that Andrzejs team was able to secure for this experiment....

plnog #18

after being absent on three PLNOG editions, i finally made it to the conference and to agenda. my presentation slides are here. i tried to cover everything important from networking perspective starting from IMP and ending on NPU, reprogrammable ASICs and what’s lurking in the future. of course if you’ll vote by your surveys, i hope to get back to delivering presentations. what’s interesting is that Krzysztof Kania also picked up architectural topics in his article about first routers - go read!...

world is changing

…and that’s good thing. with only two weeks to seventeed edition of PLNOGa we have bunch of interesting news. conference, that we started by discussing BGP, MPLS-TE and RSVP and role of 10GE interfaces (we’re in Europe and that was 2009!), today focuses on deploying SDN, and influence of IoT to service provider networks. we’re also discussing public cloud, hybrid cloud, software defined data centers (SDDC) and consequences of proliferation of overlay networks....

plnog #14

I was taking part of PLNOG for the last two days. i didn’t have opportunity to take part of the last edition and it’s a shame - we created this conference with Andrzej Targosz. a lot changed during last couple of years. but what was always key of the whole PLNOG - community - is only developing. i’m not about the direction, but the sole fact we have a lot of discussions about direction gives hope....

Aegis at UW

Maciej Broniarz invited us to take part in new security focused conference. Aegis (just like Aegis - American integrated naval weapons system) will take place on 2nd and 3rd July at University of Warsaw. i hope that most of you will decide to take part of it, as judging from agenda. together with Maciej we’d like to also have a panel on DDoS attacks, and then we’ll deliver session together - ‘security by duct tape’....

IP network security

next thursday, april 11th, i’ll be visiting Warsaw University on invitation from Maciej Broniarz to have a chat about security from service provider point of view. note it will be mechnism and best practice related talk, not vendor pitch. i’ll mention blackholing as well ;) i may have some gadgets and freebies to give away - so please prepare good questions and see you there!

we, 2001:420:80:1:c:15c0:d06:f00d

“Cisco eats in own dog food” or as you may elite-write-it: c15c0 d06 f00d. we announced participation in ISOC IPv6 day as a first vendor. some parts of our infrastructure serve IPv6 natively, but that’s a great opportunity to test it at scale - including hardware and software for systems that’s used for our internal and Customer services. among other things we’re testing AnyConnect 3.0 with native IPv6 support (public version is going to be available in couple of months), ACE 3....

plnog #6 - completed

i’d like to thank everyone that was part of last PLNOG edition. we introduced education track - that was your idea, voiced in chats and in surveys. it seems that the idea was right, so on september PLNOG edition we’ll continue with MPLS and QoS. also according to announcements, we did joint session with Rafał about architecture of ethernet switches and IP routers. i hope you liked it. we still miss real life use case sessions provided by you - service providers....

to queue or buffer? or not?

for some time Jim Gettys on his blog is writing a lot about problems caused by buffers, queues and other congestion avoidance mechanisms. you should really read about them. especially, if you’re in this group that believes big buffers solve all of the problems, and dropping traffic is absolute evil. nowadays it should be treated as absolutely normal thing - in most of the real life cases. on the upcoming, sixth PLNOG we may be able to tackle this problem (if there will be space in agenda), and have a shot at myths and legends related to network QoS....

lisp@plnog#5

i was stubborn - and while from the very first moment we’ve had a lot of challenges with the hotel infrastructure, i was able to run xTR routers during last PLNOG for LISP. no, it’s not about programming Cisco routers with LISP, but about new concept of Location/ID Split, that is new concept enabling you to treat traffic engineering in internet differently. in short - we still serve traffic like we always did (backward compatibility), but by assigning users and companies IPv4 and IPv6 addressing from special pools, we can treat this traffic in a different manner....

plnog 5 - sidr i lisp

during upcoming PLNOG i’ll cover two relatively new features available in Cisco gear. LISP which stands for Locator/ID SPlit is first, deployed and available both commercially and as open source code) solution that can enable internet to scale out without further growth of routing table size. it also brings advanced traffic engineering capabilities to pure IP networks. LISP was invented and is being actively developed by Cisco employees, working in different teams across research and development departaments....

fifth PLNOG edition is coming in on 21st and 22nd of october this year. this time we’ll have Merike Kaeo delivering keynote session. her topic of choice? security - suprising, isn’t it? :P as you can imagine we’re buttoning up agenda and it will be published soon. in the meantime, we already have over 200 attendees registered, which is great result given you still don’t know what you’ll be able to see :)...

after plnog #4

plnog, plnog and… gone. it looks like we have actually grown into the most serious and largest independent conference dedicated to people working on service provider networks in Poland - though I’m not going to fight anyone on the number of participants, this additional 100 people on each subsequent edition of PLNOG (we counted 395 participants this time!) speaks for itself. to the point that I’ve met many people for the first time in my life :)...
